De-labelling for Minorities

Updated: May 3, 2022

In today's society, we habitually refer to LGBTQ groups as minorities, but the question is: are they?

Bisexuals make up 1.8% of the population, while lesbians make up 3.8%. These figures come from the United States in 2013, a time when the wider society was not as open as it is now. It is expected that there are more people out there today who fit the definition of LGBTQ+.

There is a culture called "0" "1" culture, where "0" represents the female side of the traditional concept of the impression of sexual intercourse and "1" is the opposite. These types of comics distinguish between heterosexuality and homosexuality in life through unrealistic fantasies. People are embracing LGBTQ while comparing them to the more traditional heterosexual groups we are more familiar with.

More importantly, there is an "ABO" setting in the comic, where "A" is ALPHA, meaning they have supreme power and wealth from birth, and they must be an "1" ALPHA. On the other hand, the opposite is "O" (OMEGA), a group that is at the bottom of society from birth, they are "0" and have to wait for the redemption of their own ALPHA. This type of caricature not only rigidly defines the gay community, but also solidifies and pathologizes the entire social class.

The current situation is, many people in China (mostly female groups) who have come into contact with the LGBTQ community because of comics, and they have begun to pay attention to them and speak for them on major websites.

Labelling before De-labelling

The road to de-labelling of the LGBTQ community still needs a lot of work.

The following manga is from Korean called "Love is Fantasy". Based on author’s observation, it is true that because of the prevalence of gay comics in Japan and South Korea, more and more people have begun to contact and accept the LGBTQ community.

It is also a side proof that the LGBTQ+ needs to be conceptualised before the ultimate ideal of de-labelling can be achieved, even if new misunderstandings may arise in the process. But the conflicts that arise from misunderstandings can be resolved proactively, whereas delaying confronting them again and again only escalates them into attitudes that border on hatred.

The rise in women's purchasing power is a reflection of progress in many areas of society, such as a system of equal opportunities for both sexes and equal pay for equal work in the industry and the care of public interest organisations. The rise in women's purchasing power has also been accompanied by numerous business opportunities. The most direct manifestation of this is the numerous films and television productions about the gay community that have sprung up. The aim of these films is simple: to cater to the tastes of the audience and to make money. The films are filled with too much pornography and stereotypes of the gay community, which brings significant obstacles to the de-labelling of the LGBTQ community.
